Guardians of the Sunrise

Mythology uses symbolism and story, attempting to explain the seen and especially the unseen of one’s world. In this garden sculpture, it pays tribute to the life-giving Sun. while the grotesques symbolically protect people, home and property from evil. 

Below a flying reptile “soldier” who carries a weapon made from bone, whispers in the ear of the frightening and grotesque guardian-protector. 

Facing East to greet the morning Sun, dancers don ceremonial garb to worship and pay homage to the blessings of of the Sun and all its benefits. 

Hand shading his eyes, the figure symbolically attempts to see beyond his immediate reality. The small human figure is accompanied by his faithful, miniature dog, both facing East in anticipation of Sunrise. 

The friendly dragon holds an egg representing renewed life and the future. 

Ever on the alert for Evil, a grotesque guardian creature in the form of dragon frightens all. A chance encounter by one of the human figures, shows him to cower with frightening posture.
